这是一首离别情歌，使人想起国内曾经风靡一时的《小芳》（李春波）：当然，《小芳》是要走的人留恋曾经在的地方，而《red river valley》是送别的人怀念曾经有过的好时光，两首歌曲的角度是相反的从歌曲内容的角度讲，这首歌显然已经不是儿歌了，算是“民歌”（folk song），不过经susie tallman这么一改编，它就是了。

本来歌曲的忧伤氛围在歌词减少到两节之后被冲淡了，我们听者更多地把注意力投向曲调了由于是成年人的感情内容，歌词的语言形式比一般的儿歌要丰富多了，宾语从句、定语从句、祈使句……所在多有从音韵的角度看，这首歌是典型的abab型韵脚，这称为alternate rhyme。
